Degrees and Certifications:
Melissa Southwell first joined Vineland Elementary School as a 2nd grade student. After college, she returned and became part of our teaching staff. She is starting her 17th year, having taught first, second, and fifth grades at VES during that time.
Although born in Toms River, New Jersey, Melissa has resided in Englewood since 1989. She received her Bachelors Degree in Pre-K/Primary/Elementary from Florida Southern College. In 2008, she attained her National Board certification in Early Childhood Education.
When not at school, Mrs. Southwell is devoted to her family. She has been married for 14 years to “Coach” Southwell, a teacher and football coach at Lemon Bay High School. They have a 10 year old daughter, Summer, who is in 5th grade, and a 6 year old son, Sawyer, who is in first grade. Our 2 year old yellow lab, Skipper, completes the family. Mrs. Southwell enjoys all things having to do with the water. She was a competitive swimmer through college. She still enjoys swimming, and loves to boat, fish, and relax on the beach whenever possible. Mrs. Southwell has always loved learning and helping others, especially children. She hopes to make a positive and lasting impression in the lives of her students.
Personal mission statement: I will strive to lead a loving and positive learning environment where all students are encouraged to better themselves in every way.
