Charlotte County Public Schools Receives $1.4 Million Workforce Development Grant for Advanced Manufacturing Programs
CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (October 22, 2024) – Charlotte County Public Schools (CCPS) has been awarded $1.4 million through the Florida Department of Education's Workforce Capitalization Incentive (Workforce CAP) Grant Program. The funding will support the creation of advanced manufacturing programs at Charlotte Technical College and Port Charlotte High School, providing students access to high-demand, high-wage career paths in advanced manufacturing and production technology.
The grant is part of a statewide initiative to enhance workforce development, aligning with Gov. Ron DeSantis' vision to make Florida the top state for workforce education by 2030. The $62 million in funding awarded across the state will give students hands-on learning experiences in critical industries, including aerospace, biomedical science, and advanced manufacturing.
“This funding represents a significant investment in the future of our students and our community and perfectly aligns with our Space Florida partnership,” said Superintendent Mark Vianello. “By adding advanced manufacturing programs at Charlotte Technical College and Port Charlotte High School, we are offering more choices within our Career Planning Guide and building a strong local talent pipeline. These programs will equip our students with the skills needed for high-paying careers right here in Southwest Florida, ensuring they are prepared for the workforce and ready to succeed.”
The advanced manufacturing program will provide students with cutting-edge training and certifications that meet industry standards, offering a direct path to employment in one of the region's fastest-growing sectors. Through partnerships with local businesses, students will also have opportunities to participate in internships and apprenticeships, gaining real-world experience before they graduate.
"The Charlotte County Economic Development Partnership is thrilled to learn that Charlotte County Public Schools has received an additional $1.4 million in grants from the Florida Department of Education to support its newest initiative in advanced manufacturing," said Derek Rooney, president of the Charlotte County Economic Development Partnership. "The continued efforts of the superintendent and the school board to equip the next generation with skills that align with industry demands are essential in diversifying and driving economic growth in our community. This comes on the heels of the school board’s recent successes in launching the Space Academy and expanding the Airframe and Powerplant training center in partnership with Charlotte Technical College and the Charlotte County Airport Authority."
The $1.4 million grant is part of CCPS’s broader strategy to expand Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, ensuring students have the tools and resources needed to thrive in today’s evolving job market.
In addition to advanced manufacturing programs, CCPS remains committed to providing students with resources to explore various career options. The district’s Career Planning Guide offers comprehensive information on career paths, including advanced manufacturing, while Space Florida’s Space Academies provide opportunities for students interested in aerospace and related industries.
